Oct. 4: NHL Preseason Roundup


Kirill Kaprizov scored in his preseason debut for the Minnesota Wild in a 3-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Monday.

The forward, who also had an assist, signed a five-year, $45 million contract Sept. 21.

Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin scored for the Wild, and Kaapo Kahkonen made 15 saves.

It was Minnesota’s first win of the preseason (1-2-0).

Alex Newhook scored for the Avalanche (1-2-0), and Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves.

Flyers 2, Bruins 1 (OT): Ivan Provorov scored 50 seconds into overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Monday.

Sean Couturier scored a power-play goal at 19:41 of the second period to tie the game 1-1 for the Flyers.

Carter Hart made 24 saves for Philadelphia.

Jack Studnicka scored for Boston, and Jeremy Swayman made 34 saves.

Blackhawks 6, Red Wings 4: Jonathan Toews had three assists for the Chicago Blackhawks in a 6-4 preseason win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Monday.

MacKenzie Entwistle‘s second goal of the game broke a tie at 10:20 of the third period. 

Tyler Johnson and Jake McCabe each scored his first goal for Chicago. Johnson was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 27, and McCabe agreed to a four-year contract July 28.

Brandon Hagel had three assists, Philipp Kurashev scored, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves for the Blackhawks.

Bobby Ryan, Moritz Seider, Robby Fabbri and Lucas Raymond each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who were 4-for-5 on the power play. Thomas Greiss made 28 saves.

Maple Leafs 3, Senators 1: Michael Amadio scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-1 at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa on Monday.

After Amadio made it 2-1 with 1:25 remaining, Pierre Engvall scored his second goal of the game into an empty net with one second left for the 3-1 final.

Kirill Semyonov had two assists, and Jack Campbell made 26 saves for the Maple Leafs.

Connor Brown scored, and Matt Murray made 24 saves for the Senators.

Devils 4, Capitals 1: Mackenzie Blackwood saved 15 of 16 shots through two periods for the New Jersey Devils in a 4-1 preseason win against the Washington Capitals at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Monday.

Michael McLeod had a goal and an assist, and Janne Kuokkanen had two assists for the Devils, who are 4-0-0 in the preseason.

Blackwood has allowed one goal in each of his past two games; he made 15 saves in a 2-1 overtime win against the New York Islanders in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Saturday.

Connor McMichael scored for the Capitals, who have lost their first four games of the preseason (0-3-1). Vitek Vanecek made 22 saves.

Washington defenseman Martin Fehervary left the game in the second period because of an upper-body injury.

Blue Jackets 5, Sabres 3: Jakub Voracek had a goal and two assists for the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 5-3 preseason win against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Monday.

Voracek, who was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers on July 24, scored his first goal of the preseason on the power play to make it 1-0 at 3:31 of the first period.

Patrik Laine and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had a goal and an assist, and Zach Werenski had two assists for Columbus. Joonas Korpisalo made 17 saves before being replaced at the start of the third period by Daniil Tarasov, who allowed two goals on 10 shots.

Casey Mittelstadt scored twice, Jeff Skinner had two assists, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 25 saves for Buffalo.
