Hughes, Devils end six-game losing streak with win against Sabres


BUFFALO — Jack Hughes had a goal and two assists, and the New Jersey Devils ended a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Wednesday.

Jesper Bratt also had a goal and two assists for the Devils (11-15-5), who were outscored 26-12 during the streak and lost 15 of their previous 18 games. Mackenzie Blackwood made 19 saves.

Tage Thompson had two goals, and Ethan Prow scored in his NHL debut for the Sabres (10-16-5), who were 2-0-2 in their previous four games. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 38 saves.

Hughes and Yegor Sharangovich scored 2:22 apart in the third period to give New Jersey a 4-2 lead. Hughes made it 3-2 at 4:28 on a rebound at the right side of the net, and Sharangovich redirected a point shot from Ty Smith at 6:50.

Dougie Hamilton gave the Devils a 1-0 lead on the power play, one-timing a pass from Hughes from the point at 4:43 of the first period.

Bratt made it 2-0 at 11:48 on a rebound of P.K. Subban‘s point shot that bounced to Bratt in the slot before he skated to the goal line and lifted it over Luukkonen.

Thompson, in the slot, tipped in Alex Tuch‘s shot from the point 33 seconds into the second period to cut it to 2-1.

Tuch was activated from injured reserve (shoulder) and made his Sabres debut after being acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights on Nov. 4.

Thompson then tied it 2-2 at 3:17. Rasmus Dahlin (two assists) stole the puck from Jesper Boqvist in the Sabres end and lobbed a pass to Thompson for a breakaway.

Prow scored his first NHL goal off a rebound from the bottom of the left face-off circle at 14:38 of the third period for the 4-3 final.
