Staal agrees to one-year contract to remain with Red Wings

Marc Staal agreed to a one-year contract to remain with the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 34-year-old defenseman could have become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday. He scored 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 56 games for the Red Wings this season, his first after being acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers on Sept. 26, 2020.

Selected by New York with the No. 12 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft, Staal has scored 198 points (46 goals, 152 assists) in 948 regular-season games, and 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) in 107 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
