Rangers keep pace in East playoff race with victory against Sabres

Igor Shesterkin made 36 saves, and the New York Rangers kept pace in the MassMutual East Division playoff race with a 3-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday.

Alexis Lafrenière broke a tie in the third period for the Rangers (26-18-6), who won their third straight to sweep the two-game set.

Sam Reinhart scored, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 38 saves for the Sabres (13-30-7), who lost 6-3 here on Sunday.

Lafreniere scored on a one-timer from the high slot to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 9:49 of the third period. 

Mika Zibanejad, at the left side of the net, extended it to 3-1 on the power play at 13:49.

Brendan Smith put the Rangers in front 1-0 at 2:22 of the second period when Sabres center Dylan Cozens‘ pass attempt went through Anders Bjork‘s legs to Smith at the point.

An open Reinhart in the slot scored for a third straight game to tie it 1-1 on the power play at 19:56.
