Mercer scores first for Devils in win against Kraken; Hughes injured

NEWARK, N.J. — Dawson Mercer scored his first NHL goal, and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Seattle Kraken 4-2 at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

Damon Severson, Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Zacha scored, Ryan Graves had two assists, and Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves to help the Devils win their second straight game to start the season.

New Jersey center Jack Hughes had an assist before leaving the game with 1:06 remaining in the first period with an undisclosed injury. 

Riley Sheahan and Jared McCann scored, Yanni Gourde had an assist in his season debut, and Joey Daccord made 29 saves for the expansion Kraken, who lost their third straight. Daccord was recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Tuesday. 

Mercer, selected by New Jersey in the first round (No. 18) of the 2020 NHL Draft, gave the Devils a 1-0 lead when the center scored on a one-timer from the bottom of the left face-off circle to finish a 2-on-1 with Tomas Tatar 5:02 into the first period. 

Severson scored on a backhand from the slot to make it 2-0 at 6:42.

Nico Hischier scored for the Devils as the period ended, but the goal was overturned after video review determined the puck crossed the goal line after time expired.

Sheahan scored from the left circle to pull Seattle within 2-1 at 10:05 of the second period.

Vesey scored his first goal with the Devils for a 3-1 lead on a snap shot from the slot at 14:48.

McCann scored on a wrist shot from the left circle during a two-man advantage to pull cut it to 3-2 at 14:41 of the third period.

Zacha scored into an empty net with 20 seconds remaining for the 4-2 final.

Seattle had a goal overturned after after Alex Wennberg scored on a wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle at 16:39 of the second and New Jersey challenged for offside.

Kraken center Morgan Geekie left the game with an undisclosed injury at 17:52 of the second period.
