Nathan MacKinnon will make his season debut for the Colorado Avalanche at the Washington Capitals on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN+, HULU, NHL LIVE).
The center, who missed the first two games of the season after testing positive for COVID-19 on Oct.12, joined the Avalanche in Washington on Monday night and took part in the morning skate Tuesday.
Before the Avalanche practiced Tuesday, coach Jared Bednar said the decision to play would be up to MacKinnon.
“You know Nate, he’ll be champing at the bit to play,” Bednar told Altitude 92.5 FM.
MacKinnon finished eighth in the NHL with 65 points (20 goals, 45 assists) and was plus-22 in 48 games last season. He was third in voting for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.
“He’s one of the top threats in the League,” Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said of MacKinnon. “Just having been in Nashville for six years and getting a good look at him on a regular dose, the speed in which he plays the game and his skill set, it’s up there.”
Colorado (1-1-0) defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 in its season opener Wednesday and lost to the St. Louis Blues 5-3 on Saturday.
