Lafrenieres first NHL goal gives Rangers OT victory against Sabres

BUFFALO — Alexis Lafreniere scored his first NHL goal 2:47 into overtime to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Thursday.

The No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft had gone his first six NHL games without a point.

Sabres forward Sam Reinhart finished off a quick passing sequence on the power play to tie it 2-2 from in front at 4:47 of the third period.

Artemi Panarin had a goal and an assist, and Igor Shesterkin made 23 saves for the Rangers (2-4-1), who were winless in four games (0-3-1).

Reinhart had a goal and an assist and Linus Ullmark made 36 saves for the Sabres (3-3-2).

Panarin sent a pass to a streaking Ryan Strome at the bottom of the right circle to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 9:44 of the first period.

Eichel tied it 1-1 at 19:38 off the rush, redirecting a pass from Reinhart by the pad of Shesterkin.

A bouncing, loose puck on a Sabres clearing attempt made its way to Panarin in the left circle, and he made it 2-1 at 16:10 of the second period.
