RALEIGH, N.C. — Adam Erne, Filip Zadina and Sam Gagner scored in the third period when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 at PNC Arena on Monday.
Jonathan Bernier made 37 saves and Michael Rasmussen had two assists for the Red Wings (15-23-6), who swept the two-game set after a 5-4 shootout win on Saturday.
Jordan Staal had an assist in his 1,000th NHL game, and Nino Niederreiter scored for the Hurricanes (27-10-4). James Reimer made 27 saves.
The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead at 24 seconds of the third period. Rasmussen drove the right wing and circled the net before making a backhand feed across the crease to Erne for a tap-in at the right post.
The goal was upheld on review after Detroit challenged for offside and then was assessed a delay of game penalty.
The Red Wings made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 2:34. Zadina finished a quick sequence of passes from Dylan Larkin and Rasmussen from the right face-off circle.
Niederreiter followed his own centering pass and scored from low in the right to cut Detroit’s lead to 2-1 at 13:54.
Sam Gagner scored an empty-net goal with 55 seconds remaining for the 3-1 final.
Detroit played without forward Anthony Mantha, who was traded to the Washington Capitals for forwards Jakub Vrana and Richard Panik and two draft picks on Monday.
