UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Mathew Barzal scored a hat trick and had five points for the New York Islanders in an 8-4 win against the Washington Capitals at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday.
Jordan Eberle scored two goals and an assist and Josh Bailey had a goal and two assists for the Islanders (23-10-4), who defeated the Capitals for the first time this season (1-3-0). Semyon Varlamov made 18 saves.
John Carlson scored two goals and Daniel Sprong had a goal and an assist for the Capitals (23-9-4).
Ilya Samsonov started in goal but left 30 seconds into the first period after colliding with teammate T.J. Oshie behind the net. Vitek Vanecek made seven saves on nine shots in 16:26 before Samsonov returned at 16:56 of the first and finished with 18 saves on 24 shots.
The teams combined for 10 goals in the first two periods.
Carlson gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 1:01 of the first.
Eberle made it 1-1 at 5:02, and Barzal gave New York a 2-1 lead when he skated the length of the ice and scored on a wrist shot at 16:09.
Brock Nelson made it 3-1 1:23 later on a shot from the slot at 17:32.
Sprong pulled the Capitals within 3-2 at 17:54.
Barzal made it 4-2 on a spin-o-rama from the left circle at 18:53 of the first.
Casey Cizikas gave the Islanders a 5-2 lead from the slot at 3:03 of the second period.
Oshie scored to pull the Capitals within 5-3 when the puck deflected off his right skate in the slot at 6:47 of the second.
Eberle gave the Islanders a 6-3 lead at 8:08, but Carlson made it 6-4 at 19:01.
Bailey scored on a wrist shot from the left circle for a 7-4 lead at 3:13 of the third period.
Barzal completed the hat trick with 1:06 remaining for the 8-4 final.
It was the fourth five-point game of Barzal’s NHL career and first since Jan. 13, 2018 at the New York Rangers.
